The Nationals are set to finish a three-game series with the New York Mets tonight. First baseman Nick Johnson is back in the lineup after a day off. He will bat fifth tonight, however – just the 18th time all season Johnson has not batted in the No. 2 spot in the order.
Interim manager Jim Riggleman has said this week he wants to get every regular in the starting lineup a day off – or two – over the next few weeks. Because of a make-up game to be played this Thursday at home against St. Louis, the Nats will have played 25 days in a row when they finally get a rest on Aug. 10th.
