Top Five: Recent Virginia Tech-Miami games

Miami won the first 12 meetings with Virginia Tech (1953-94). But everything changed in 1995, when Frank Beamer beat the Hurricanes on his fifth try. With the teams meeting Saturday in Blacksburg, here are five memorable games in which the stakes were high. 5. Miami 41, Virginia Tech 21 (2000) » Ken Dorsey threw two touchdown passes to Santana Moss and one to Jeremy Shockey and Ed Reed returned an interception for a touchdown as the No. 3 Hurricanes beat the No. 2 Hokies at home.

4. Miami 26, Virginia Tech 24 (2001) » Needing a win to clinch a BCS championship game berth, undefeated Miami rolled to a 20-3 lead in Blacksburg before withstanding a Virginia Tech rally. Reed sealed it with an interception.

3. Virginia Tech 16, Miami 10 (2004) » With the ACC championship and a BCS bowl berth on the line in the first season in the league for both teams, Bryan Randall threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Eddie Royal in the fourth quarter as the visiting No. 10 Hokies beat the No. 9 Hurricanes.

2. Virginia Tech 31, Miami 7 (2003) » The No. 10 Hokies snapped the 39-game regular-season winning streak of the visiting No. 2 Hurricanes as DeAngelo Hall scored on a fumble return and Eric Green brought back an interception for a touchdown.

1. Virginia Tech 13, Miami 7 (1995) » A week after getting shut out by underdog Cincinnati 16-0, Virginia Tech beat Big East favorite Miami, signaling a new era in Blacksburg. The victory established the Hokies’ defensive identity and ignited a nine-game winning streak that catapulted the Hokies to their first major bowl game (Sugar).
