Former Georgetown junior forward Katrina Wheeler has transferred to Towson and will be eligible to play for the Tigers? basketball team after sitting out the upcoming season.

Wheeler, a Washington, D.C. native who played at Theodore Roosevelt High, will have two years of eligibility remaining after sitting out the 2007-08 season per NCAA regulations.

“Katrina is a tremendous addition to our program,” Towson coach Joe Mathews said in a statement. “She is an elite level athlete that can help take this program forward. She will be a wonderful representative on and off the floor for Towson University.”

The 6-foot-3 Wheeler started two seasons at Georgetown, where she averaged 8.1 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. She started 51 of 53 games with the Hoyas, but will now be reunited at Towson, which went 17-12 last season, with formerhigh school teammate Shanae Baker-Brice.

UMBC WOMEN?S SOCCER: Freshmen Elyse Bilardo, Megan McDonald, Ashley Singer (Kenwood) and Sandra Vaccarino have been selected to the Region 1 Under-19 team, giving them an opportunity to make the U.S. National Team in January.

The Region 1 team includes West Virginia and East Coast states from Maine to Virginia. The team will compete against squads from the other three regional teams in January, with the best players getting selected for the national team programs.

NAVY FOOTBALL: Navy had a $1.2 million synthetic turf practice football field installed at the Annapolis campus.

The field, known as Rip Miller Field, had its old turf replaced by the Philadelphia-based Sprinturf. The company is also scheduled to install a new rugby field for Navy, which will feature its all-rubber infill system designed reduce player injury.

NAVY WOMEN?S BASKETBALL: Former UMBC team captain Tiffany Coll was recently hired as an assistant women?s basketball coach at Navy.

Coll spent the last two seasons as a graduate assistant at St. John?s (N.Y.) where she helped lead the Red Storm to a 22-8 record and the second round of the NCAA tournament during the 2005-06 season. St. John?s went 8-20 last season.

The Philadelphia-area native appeared in 101 games for UMBC before graduating in 2003. She then spent two seasons playing professionally in Europe before starting her coaching career at St. John?s.
