One of the reasons N.C. State coach Tom O’Brien granted a release to quarterback Russell Wilson — now a Heisman Trophy candidate at No. 4 Wisconsin — was what he saw in Wilson’s longtime backup, Mike Glennon. According to O’Brien, the first time he and assistant Dana Bible saw the Westfield High graduate throw up close, he reminded them of a certain quarterback they coached at Boston College.
“Dana looked at me and said, ‘This is deja vu all over again. It’s another Matt Ryan,’?” O’Brien said.

Glennon, a redshirt junior, has lived up to the comparison, completing 124 of 193 passes for 1,486 yards, 16 touchdowns and four interceptions. He ranks fourth in the ACC in yardage and pass efficiency. On Saturday, Glennon gets his first start in his home state as N.C. State (3-3) plays at Virginia (4-2).
Glennon (6-foot-6, 232 pounds) is a near physical match to Ryan (6-4, 220).
“A lot of the scouts that have been in so far have said, ‘You’ve got another Matt Ryan with a stronger arm,’?” O’Brien said.
