No more shots for Spartans’ Lucious

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo dismissed Korie Lucious from his struggling basketball team Tuesday for “conduct detrimental to the program.” The unanimous reaction in College Park: Why not last year?

Fans of the Terrapins don’t need to be reminded of the reserve guard who hit perhaps the most painful dagger in Maryland basketball history. His 3-pointer at the buzzer knocked the Terps out of the NCAA tournament when they seemed destined for a Sweet 16 matchup with Northern Iowa.

This year finds Michigan State (12-7) and Maryland (12-7) in similar straits. Both will need strong finishes to secure an NCAA bid.

Lucious was averaging 6.5 points a game and hitting 31.2 percent of his shots. Early this season, the 20-year-old Lucious was suspended following an arrest for driving while intoxicated.
