“Do I smoke marijuana? No, I don’t, but I do smoke cigars.”

Thus declared Rep. Barney Frank on Wednesday as the outspoken Massachusetts Democrat discussed his new bill that would remove federal criminal penalties for personal possession of marijuana.
Frank said that the bill would not shift any of his behaviors. “I am pretty old to have my behaviors changed, but I do obey every law I vote for,” Frank said.
“I don’t think that it is the government’s business to tell you how to spend your leisure time,” he added. “There are a lot of things people do that I don’t do and I think that they should be free to do them. There are things that I do that other people don’t do and I ought to be free to do them.”
Frank was not optimistic of this bill’s chances in Congress. “Chances are not high at this point that this legislation will pass the House floor,” Frank said.
Frank said there would be a lot more work put into this legislation when the next president takes office, but said “there is no reason to believe that Obama supports this legislation.”
