Sad time for hoops in Happy Valley

The move doesn’t make sense except that it does. When Ed DeChellis resigned as Penn State’s basketball coach to take the same job at Navy, many jaws dropped and one question was asked: Why?

The Nittany Lions reached the NCAA tournament for the first time in 10 years, two seasons after winning the NIT. But they also were graduating four starters, including their top three scorers. A major rebuilding job stared them in the face.

DeChellis was an alum and entering his ninth season with eight years of mostly lackluster numbers to his resume. He apparently asked for an extension after this past season and was denied. Penn State isn’t known for its basketball commitment. DeChellis is not a budding Gary Williams. It’s an easy leap to say at this time next year DeChellis would have been looking for a job. So he swapped little job security for likely five more years — or more — of work, likely at a level better suited for him to win.

That’s why.
