Indefinite suspensions becoming trendy

The indefinite suspension is definitely out of control.

Kansas junior guard Tyshawn Taylor was the latest player sent to college basketball purgatory, earning banishment from Jayhawks coach Bill Self for violation of team rules.

Will his punishment last one day, one year or one millennium? With the “indefinite suspension,” only Self knows.

But West Virginia’s Casey Mitchell was indefinitely suspended by Bob Huggins last month — and definitely returned after three games, while Cincinnati’s Yancy Gates was suspended indefinitely two weeks ago by Mick Cronin — and definitely came back after one.

Both Huggins and Cronin made sure the absence of the two respective starters definitely didn’t hurt their teams for too long, and Taylor definitely wasn’t missed on Monday as the third-ranked Jayhawks romped Big 12 bottom feeder Oklahoma State.

With March just around the corner, Self doesn’t have an indefinite amount of time to decide how long to keep his player out. Will Taylor miss the NCAA tournament? We can’t say it’s definite.
