Getting Walker pays off for Calhoun

Jim Calhoun had his point guard. Brandon Jennings told him he was coming to Connecticut. Of course, he had also told Southern Cal the same thing. And then Jennings told Calhoun he was going to visit Arizona.

So the UConn coach made a decision. He turned his attention to a guard from New York. Kemba Walker has worked out pretty well for the Huskies.

“To say the least,” Calhoun said in a conference call Monday.

It’s hard to imagine another player having had a better postseason than Walker. In nine games, Walker is averaging 25.3 points (compared to 23.9 for the regular season) and 5.3 assists (4.5 in the regular season).

Considering Jennings never even played for Arizona, Calhoun made the right call.

“He’s the most valuable player in the United States,” Calhoun said. “When I recruited him, I thought I was going to get a quick New York City point push guard, defender, that type of thing. He’s evolved into even more than that.”
