Top 5: Derby finishes

In recent years, there haven’t been many close calls in the Kentucky Derby. But there have been plenty in the race’s rich history. What were some of the best?

5. Silver Charm (1997) » Won by a head over Captain Bodgit and continued his success in the Preakness before finishing runner-up in the Belmont to Touch Gold.

4. Majestic Prince (1969) » Favored Majestic Prince edged highly regarded Arts and Letters and on-rushing Dike in a Derby that drew only eight entrants because of its strong field. Majestic Prince won the Preakness but — racing with an injury — was beaten by Arts and Letters in the Belmont.

3. Grindstone (1996) » In the finest moment for jockey Jerry Bailey, Grindstone made a last-ditch lunge to catch Cavonnier at the tape. It was the last race for Grindstone, who retired five days later when bone chips were discovered in his leg.

2. Dark Star (1953) » The virtual unknown handed the great Native Dancer (21-1) the only defeat of his career, winning by a head. After finishing fifth in the Preakness, Dark Star was found to have ligament damage.

1. Alysheba (1987) » Bumped at the top of the stretch by Bet Twice and nearly falling, Alysheba recovered to run down the formidable horse. Alysheba went on to win the Preakness but finished fourth in the Belmont, where Bet Twice won by 14 lengths.
