New York should be crying no MSG

It is called the “World’s Most Famous Arena” for a reason. Madison Square Garden has had too many famous sports moments to count. The atmosphere for a big game there is unsurpassed. Its location in hectic midtown Manhattan puts it at the center of American culture. If you’re an athlete and you want to matter in this country, then either win there like Mark Messier or do something great there like Michael Jordan.

But — if we’re being honest — the sucker needs to be torn down. Like yesterday. Asbestos falling from the ceiling actually forced the Knicks to postpone an NBA game against the Magic on Tuesday. It’s supposed to be cleaned and cleared to reopen in time for Friday’s game between the Knicks and Wizards. The Capitals shouldn’t have any problem when they visit the Rangers on Tuesday. But New York City, of all places, shouldn’t have such a rundown venue for its indoor sports teams. The huge HD scoreboard at Verizon Center makes the Garden’s look like a black-and-white television. Time to rebuild, New York. You deserve it.
