A nine-minute power play? You bet

It slid under the radar on a college football-crazy Saturday, but the Capitals whipped the Philadelphia Flyers, 8-2, thanks in large part to a nine-minute power play. That’s right — nine full minutes for the NHL’s No. 6-ranked power play.

Philadelphia forward Dan Carcillo sucker punched Caps forward Matt Bradley in the first period after earning a two-minute crosscheck. He was also given a five-minute major for fighting. Because Carcillo instigated the fight, jumping Bradley after a clean hit, add another two minutes.

But wait — we have 10 more minutes for misconduct and another 10 for a game misconduct. That’s a whopping 29 minutes of penalties on one play. Only one Washington player has more than that for the whole season — Alex Ovechkin (44).

The Caps, of course, scored three times before the power play ended. As for Carcillo, he’s a repeat offender and was slapped with a four-game suspension by the NHL on Sunday.
