“I’ve been here for 20 years and I’ve never had a press conference like this,” said Rep. Nita Lowey, D-N.Y., Tuesday as she spoke about global education.
Then again, she doesn’t have Shakira at most of her pressers. The international pop star was the honorary chairwoman of the Global Campaign for Education’s Action Week, which turned a House Appropriations Committee room into a red carpet.

The star arrived nearly 30 minutes late, only to encounter a scrum of photographers. As soon as she took her place in front of the too-small room, her Capitol Police escort buried his head in his hands in exhaustion.
GCE chief Gene Sperling knew his place. “With all the attention toward Nita and I, I just wanted to make sure everyone knew” Shakira was here, he quipped.

The singer was also spotted Monday having an early dinner at the Bombay Club with her sister and two promoters.
A bit lower on the celebrity scale, Justine Bateman (yes, Mallory from “Family Ties”) was on the Hill Tuesday, testifying before the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee on “The Future of the Internet.”
