Yankees take control over the Red Sox

No matter what happened in last night’s series finale, the Yankees sent the Red Sox home hurting after their four-game series in the Bronx this weekend.

There was the 13-6 blowout on Thursday, the 2-0 thriller that ended in the 15th inning on Friday — an extra blow that it was an Alex Rodriguez walk-off homer that won it — and the 5-0 shutout on Saturday. Three days, three humbling losses for Boston, which tumbled to 5 1/2 games back in the American League East pending last night’s late result.

The Red Sox have only themselves to blame as the division lead slides from view. They beat New York eight times in a row during the first half of the season. Yet, despite that individual dominance, Boston didn’t match that success against other teams and so found itself 2 1/2 games back heading into New York. With a pitching rotation that now appears paper thin, maybe its time the Red Sox simply to focus on holding onto that dwindling wild card lead, which had slipped to 1/2 game over the Texas Rangers entering play Sunday night.
