Gibbs returning? Hard to imagine

And the latest rumor, courtesy of Pro Football Talk, is: Joe Gibbs is possibly coming back to D.C. in a Bill Parcells type of role. Thus far, it’s only a rumor. Have not been able to find anyone who thinks otherwise. Some of the speculation centers around a dinner Dan Snyder and Gibbs had in Charlotte a couple weeks ago. But here’s the thing: There were approximately 20 other people at the dinner as well; it was a Bank of America function so it wasn’t a private dinner. Other team employees attended.

Could there be some validity to this? Of course. With the Redskins, anything and everything is in play until this situation is completely resolved.

But here is why some — NFL sources, a Redskins source and someone close to Gibbs — have their doubts about a Gibbs return:

1. Parcells is in Miami all day every day. It’s hard to imagine Gibbs wanting to do that with the Redskins.  Gibbs has way too much going on in Charlotte, between NASCAR, his Game Plan for Life and the grandkids.

2. Snyder offered him a similar role when he first bought the team. Gibbs said no; he did not want to make it seem like he was watching over the coach and potentially being a distraction. He knew what his name meant in this town and that it could be troublesome for a coach, especially if they start to struggle.  Of course, by now, it’s clear Gibbs won’t coach again so it would be different.

3. Gibbs was burned out with his duties the first go-round. Why would he put himself through this again? He and Snyder already talk often, so he already serves a certain role. What does he tell him? Not sure. But he has given his advice. If Gibbs were to ”return” perhaps they would slap an official advisor title on him and he’d have a little more input. The guess is that it would be done to pacify fans, but that it would not be similar to what Parcells has in Miami.

But as with any stories involving the Redskins, everything is fluid. Fun times.
