Terps’ backcourt getting restocked

Graduating Greivis Vasquez and Eric Hayes was a blow to the backcourt of Maryland. But three games into the 2010-11 season, freshmen Pe’Shon Howard and Terrell Stoglin have demonstrated they are more-than-adequate replacements.

Next year, when the Terps say goodbye to two more starting guards — Adrian Bowie and Cliff Tucker — they will look to incoming freshmen Nick Faust and Sterling Gibbs to have a similar impact. On Tuesday, both signed national letters of intent to play for Maryland.

Faust, who committed Monday night, is a 6-foot-6, 175-pound wing from Baltimore Poly. Gibbs, who committed last week, is a 6-foot-1, 180 point guard from Seton Hall Prep (N.J.).

Faust, rated the nation’s 10th best shooting guard by Rivals.com, averaged 20 points and five rebounds as a junior, leading Poly to its second straight Maryland 2A title. He chose Maryland over Marquette, Florida State and Villanova.

“Nick was one of those players who was small growing up, so nobody tried to make him into a forward,” Maryland coach Gary Williams said. “He’s a very good ball handler. He was a little guy, then all the sudden, he grows six inches.”

Gibbs averaged 20 points and eight assists for perennial power Seton Hall Prep. He chose Maryland over Indiana, Florida and Pittsburgh, the school where his older brother, Ashton, stars.

Gibbs will get a chance to see his brother and his future team Thursday when Maryland plays Pitt in the 2K Sports Classic at Madison Square Garden.
