Where’s the love for Wozniacki?

Caroline Wozniacki has lost 10 games in four matches to reach the quarterfinals of this year’s U.S. Open — where she’s the top seed and where she reached the final last year. She’s 18-1 this summer since Wimbledon with three titles. So why does it feel like she hasn’t done anything yet?

First, beating No. 14 Maria Sharapova 6-3, 6-4 in the fourth round on Monday isn’t exactly a marquee achievement. Sharapova hasn’t had a second serve since shoulder surgery and has been to the quarterfinals of just one major since winning the 2008 Australian Open.

Second, Svetlana Kuznetsova was the only top-10 seed Wozniacki faced en route to last year’s title loss to Kim Clijsters.

And third, Serena Williams isn’t playing, which is why Wozniacki is seeded No. 1 and not No. 2.

None of this is the 20-year-old Dane’s fault, but the only way for her to justify her seeding will be by chasing down Clijsters or Venus Williams in the final the way she’s chased down every ball in New York over the last week.
