Cheers & Jeers: Things heating up, then cooling down

National League pennant chase » It’s the home stretch in Major League Baseball with playoff spots at stake. Despite losing 8-of-9 recently, the Chicago Cubs, with a six-game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers entering play last night, should hold on in the National League Central. But the Cubs will have a big say about the NL wild card berth with a game tonight against Houston — in Milwaukee thanks to Hurricane Ike — and then series with the wild-card leading Brewers and the St. Louis Cardinals.

American League pennant chase » The Los Angeles Angels already clinched the American League West. The other two divisions may be decided in Tampa Bay, where the Boston Red Sox begin a three-game AL East showdown at the Rays. Later in the week, Tampa hosts Minnesota, which trailed the first-place Chicago White Sox by a game in the AL Central prior to Chicago’s doubleheader vs. Detroit last night.
