Glenelg?s Kristy Black ended her high school career exactly the way she concluded her freshman season: hugging her teammates after winning the Class 2A/1A state title.

But this time, the midfielder accomplished the feat in record fashion during her team?s 17-11 victory over Loch Raven at UMBC on Tuesday.

Black had 11 points ? six goals, five assists ? to surpass the previous 2A/1A championship game-record of nine, set by Loch Raven?s Michele DeJulius in 1992. Black?s output was one point shy of tying the all-classification record of 12, set by C. Milton Wright?s Kadie Stamper in 2004. Black?s five assists tied Kristen Waagbo?s all-classification record for most in a title game, which the Mount Hebron star set in the 3A/2A final in 2002, but Black holds the mark in 2A/1A.

“We just got the draw controls,” Black, who will play for Maryland next season, said. “If you do that you always have a chance to score.”

And that?s exactly what Glenelg did. The Gladiators (16-4) scored the final seven goals of the first half to turn a 5-4 deficit into an 11-6 lead they would not relinquish. In the first half, Black teamed with classmate Alayna Markwordt to score eight goals.

Loch Raven cut the lead to 13-9 with 12:54 remaining on consecutive goals by senior midfielder Taylor Moyer, but Markwordt, who finished with six goals and four assists, responded with a pair to restore the six-goal lead and end Loch Raven?s season at 12-4.

Loch Raven, which was making its first appearance in the state final since 1997, was led by Moyer (five goals, one assist) and junior attacker Gabi Miller (four goals).

“We made it to regional finals the past two years,” Moyer said. “To make it this far this year is great and it?s hard to see it end.”

But it was a great way for Markwordt to end her career, as she ended the fall season by leading her team to the 1A soccer title.

“I won states earlier this year for soccer,” Markwordt said. “I wanted to have that feeling again.”
