Baseball getting stars in realignment?

Baseball might undergo another change. Again.

According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, Major League Baseball and the players association have discussed a radical change: going to two 15-team divisions and increasing the number of playoff teams from each league to five.

In this scenario, one team would have to move from the National League to the American League — Houston has been mentioned as a possibility. As of now, chances are this setup won’t become reality.

Among the issues: If there are 15-team leagues, that means there must be one interleague series all the time. The good news is that the unbalanced schedules would end.

Our problem with having five playoff teams is that one team has a bye. Long layoffs are never good at that time of the season, not in a sport that relies on staying in a rhythm both in terms of pitching and hitting.

But even if this doesn’t happen, one thing is clear. Baseball is in the mood to tinker with its format.
