Holliday not ready to celebrate

The flurry of activity prompted by the announcement at the NFL labor negotiations Thursday caused more speculation and then … what exactly? Certainly not a lot of optimism. Not by Redskins union representative Vonnie Holliday.

“I don’t know how optimistic I can get given that we have not received any formal proposal or anything that we can discuss as a board in terms of a new CBA agreement,” he said.

Holliday wonders whether this extension is a ruse or a path to an actual proposal. Holliday did make it clear he’s not a fan of an 18-game schedule, which the owners want.

“Off the table for us,” he said.

And while he agrees a rookie wage scale is important, he’s reluctant to have players wait until their fourth or even fifth year to reach free agency. After all, the average career is 3 1/2 years.

Add it up and that’s why Holliday says, “I don’t know what we’re going to accomplish in the next 24 hours that we couldn’t get done in the past two years. … If we had anything we would be having discussions about it. We’re not there yet.”
