Cheers & Jeers » Sims is finding game at Gtown

Henry Sims was up late and on the phone with his girlfriend (not studying?) last week watching his putback dunk in Georgetown’s game against Notre Dame end up as one of ESPN SportsCenter’s top plays.

“When I saw it,” Sims told The Examiner’s Craig Stouffer, “I was ready to see it again. I wanted to stay up until 3:50 so it would come on again.”

In one play, the freshman from Mount St. Joseph’s in Baltimore showed he is starting to find his way with the 13th-ranked Hoyas (11-3, 2-2 Big East).

“It helps my confidence from the coaches,” said Sims of his highlight reel play. “It made me feel like I was doing something more than just catching the ball and passing it.”

Sims played 14 solid minutes against the Fighting Irish (two points, two rebounds, one steal) and the same vs. Providence (five points, two rebounds, one block).

He was on the floor during Georgetown’s game-turning 21-2 second-half run against the Friars. At 6-foot-10 — the Hoyas’ second tallest player — he’s better suited for the interior than the perimeter, where he started the year with seven straight misses from 3-point range in Georgetown’s first five games.

“He tries to dunk everything now,” joked senior guard Jessie Sapp.

Sims hasn’t attempted a three-pointer in the last three games.

“This is the first time playing out on the 3-point line,” said Sims. “I got a little happy, I guess you could say. But I’ve calmed down now and adjusted to my game.”
