It wasn’t exactly the start Maryland senior guard Adrian Bowie had hoped for. A key presence off the bench during his first three seasons in College Park, the Montrose Christian product bided his team behind former high school teammate Greivis Vasquez, now an NBA rookie with the Memphis Grizzlies.
Handed the starting point guard role, Bowie knew he had a short leash with two talented freshmen — Terrell Stoglin and Pe’Shon Howard — pushing him for playing time. So beginning his 2010-11 season with three turnovers, two fouls and a missed 3-pointer all before the first television timeout in Monday night’s game vs. Seattle couldn’t have inspired much confidence from coach Gary Williams.

Bowie finished with seven turnovers and two assists. He did have nine points — but foul trouble limited him to just 12 minutes. Meanwhile, Stoglin created enough havoc on offense to take — and make — nine free throws with four assists. He did have four turnovers, however. Howard had a game-high eight assists, three steals and three turnovers and appeared far more at ease in a game where the tempo resembled a NASCAR race. Bowie’s foul trouble was a mitigating factor, but Howard played 24 minutes and Stoglin earned 18. We’ll see if Bowie responds against the College of Charleston on Wednesday night at Comcast Center. Because he can’t afford another performance like that.
