Washington releases relief pitcher Colome

The Nationals are serious about signing star free-agent first baseman Mark Teixeira.

Multiple high-level baseball sources have told The Examiner’s Jim Williams that the organization is willing to offer Teixeira a contract of 10 years and $200 million. That would rank as the third richest contract in Major League Baseball history, behind only the mega deals for third baseman Alex Rodriguez — currently 10 years, $275 million with the New York Yankees.

However, various media reports stated the Nats have submitted an offer for the 28-year-old Severna Park, Md.-native to the tune of eight years and between $160 million and $180 million.

According to various media reports, Teixeira’s agent, Scott Boras, has said that all interested parties (believed to be the Angels, Orioles and Red Sox) have submitted a formal offer on the first baseman.

Teixeira is a six-year veteran, playing for three different teams — Texas, Atlanta and the Los Angeles Angels.

» On Wednesday, the Nats also released reliever Jesus Colome. The 30-year-old right-hander was 2-2 with a 4.31 ERA last season. That leaves the club with 38 men left on its 40-man roster entering today’s Rule 5 draft.
