Unfortunately, BCS is working

For three months Boise State had been like the Tea Party — gaining support not for what it stands for but what it stands against. The Broncos had become America’s Team, the darlings of BCS bashers everywhere.

With Boise State’s loss Friday to Nevada, however, BCS haters have lost the champion of their cause. Some still will swing TCU at the BCS piñata, but by themselves, the Horned Frogs don’t have the same punching power.

After this season of discontent, is it possible that the evil BCS will produce a satisfying title game?

Oregon and Auburn are destined to meet Jan. 10 in Glendale, Ariz. If one happens to slip up next week, TCU will be a perfectly acceptable fill-in. If those top teams don’t, TCU gets to state its case against Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl.

In fact, all the BCS bowls are shaping up nicely and fairly. If Auburn beats South Carolina next week, the Sugar Bowl will settle for the next best SEC team, probably Arkansas, and the second best from the Big Ten, Ohio State.

The Big 12 champion will go to the Fiesta Bowl. The winner in the ACC is destined for the Orange. That will leave the Big East champion (probably UConn) to play in the Fiesta or Orange, with the last slot going to the next highest ranked team in the BCS standings, which likely will be Stanford.

Short of a playoff, what’s not to like?
