Another bad break for the Cardinals

At least the St. Louis Cardinals already know what to do when a star player is hurt. It’s the third time this season they have had to deal with that scenario, having lost pitcher Adam Wainright for the season and Matt Holliday for 25 games.

And now Albert Pujols is done for at least four weeks with a broken bone near his left wrist.

It couldn’t have come at a worse time for the Cardinals. They were starting to play well and entered Monday tied with Milwaukee for first place. However, the Cardinals have a terrible defense and shoddy bullpen. Losing your best offensive player — a guy who was hitting .317 with eight homers, 14 RBI and 10 walks in June — is never good.

In the best-case scenario, let’s say Pujols misses only 22 games. Nineteen of those would be vs. teams that entered Monday at .500 or better. After that, the next 13 games are against sub-.500 teams.

Somehow, the Cardinals need to keep doing what they’ve done all season: hang on.
