Cheap options to fill Wiz holes

Now that the whirlwind first week of NBA free agency has passed, the Wizards can get into the mix for a lower-priced big man. There isn’t a ton of cash left for a team that is already over the luxury tax — meaning any new contract must be matched dollar-for-dollar, turning the Wizard’s $1.99 million biannual exception into an almost $4 million payout. They also have the $5.6 million mid-level exception to use, if needed. Some remaining free-agent candidates at center or power forward:

Rasho Nesterovic »  Familiar with new coach Flip Saunders, who had him for five years in Minnesota. A 7-footer who can bang with opposing centers. Would have to take a pay cut from last year’s $8.4 million salary. Signing likely contingent on Wizards moving veteran guard Mike James, who makes $6.46 million, but has a valuable expiring contract if any teams can afford it.

Shelden Williams »  A draft-day bust for the Hawks in 2006, Williams would have no such expectations with the Wizards. More of a power forward at 6-foot-9, 250 pounds. Still young at 25 and could be had for the $1.99 million exemption.

Jason Collins »  A veteran who is a legitimate backup center at 7-0, 250 pounds. Just play 5 to 10 minutes a night, give up some fouls and go home. Appeared in only 31 games with Minnesota last season, but is a cheap, cheap option as a reserve.
