Hill-Backers Complete Divorce With Netroots

Howard Wolfson, a top strategist for Hillary Clinton, is joining the Fox News Channel as a contributor this week.

Before Terry McAulliffe (also a Clintonista) was crowing about “fair and balanced” Fox on Pennsylvania primary night, the whole of the Democratic field had decided to listen to the boss at Kos, refusing back in 2007 to submit to a large debate for Fox News Channel. When the rest of the media started undergoing actual physiological stimulation at the mere mention of Obama’s name, the Clinton team changed its tune.

Obama, who is quick to mimick political moves by opponents shortly after they’re proven to be politically advantageous, finally appeared on Fox News Sunday in April, after more than 750 days without an appearance. Hillary had appeared on the show in February.

Today, Wolfson argues that it’s important for a progressive voice to speak to Fox’s huge audience:

“It’s a huge audience, and it is important to have a strong, progressive voice on the network.”

It was important, particularly for reaching the kind of centrist Dems that Hillary was trying to reach, but he’s right in a larger sense, too. Fox has the largest cable audience, and while many of them will not be swayed to support true progressive, liberal policy positions, some of them may be moved to support Barack Obama, particularly given the breakneck speed with which he’s careening to center these days. It’s always seemed ridiculous and inadvisable to me that folks on the Left would avoid the outlet entirely. So much for the 50-state strategy!

The gnashing of molars and rending of hipster tees has begun at Kos.
