No experience necessary for hires

Perhaps these teams have been paying attention. Or, maybe, some of them wanted the cheaper hire.

But when it came to NFL coaching hires this offseason, seven of the eight teams that had openings opted for novice NFL head coaches.

Tennessee finished the list by choosing lifelong assistant coach Mike Munchak to replace Jeff Fisher. John Fox, hired by Denver, is the only one with prior experience.

And the biggest name was Jim Harbaugh in San Francisco, but he made his name in college.

But considering no coach has ever won a Super Bowl with two franchises — only five have even reached the game with a second team — and considering the last three winners were with their first team, this route makes sense.

It’s easier to build a proper organization this way. Coaches with too much power typically don’t win.

Let’s just see if this holds true next year when Jon Gruden, Fisher and Bill Cowher all are possibilities.
