Major League Baseball forgot to let everyone in on a secret Wednesday morning: Its season started. And it opened in Japan. With two teams who then return to play more exhibition games before everyone else begins their season. How ridiculous is that?
Contrast this with the NFL. Do you think anyone, by now, does not know the season begins on a Wednesday (Sept. 5) with the Super Bowl champion Giants hosting the Cowboys? Think the NFL would allow a season to begin in obscurity? Not a chance.

Baseball has made some good moves in recent years to increase interest, even if at the time they were panned. But having Seattle and Oakland begin their season in Japan, with the games starting at 3:10 a.m. Pacific Time, is nonsense. Does it really help market the game to have the season begin in Japan? Have a team spend a week there playing exhibition games. That’s fine. But opening the season this way? That was just absurd.
