It’s easy to understand why Karl Hobbs would return to Connecticut 10 years after he left his alma mater to become the coach at George Washington but far harder to see how it will work out.
The Colonials looked to be a stepping stone toward greater things for Hobbs when he went a combined 72-20 and made three straight NCAA tournament appearances from 2005 to 2007. But four years later he was fired by GW, and he doesn’t even have “coach” in his new title. Instead he was named the Huskies’ director of basketball administration. It’s a job that’s usually reserved for ambitious graduate assistants.

Coach Jim Calhoun also hasn’t officially announced his own return. At 69 years old, he has a new national title but also is on probation as part of self- and NCAA-imposed sanctions for recruiting violations. At some point, the Huskies need to plan for his departure.
Hobbs, in his new role, likely will help with the compliance part, but he hardly has the make of a successor.
