NCAA flexes its muscles at Notre Dame’s Abromaitis

It won’t be a case like that of Notre Dame senior forward Tim Abromaitis that brings down the NCAA. But there may be no better demonstration of how absurd its mission has become. As a sophomore in fall 2008, Abromaitis played in two exhibition games, then sat out the rest of the season as a redshirt. The NCAA only allows freshmen to play in exhibition games and still redshirt. So, according to the rule, Abromaitis used his eligibility — and could’ve been forced to lose the upcoming season.

Of course, who played him? Notre Dame coach Mike Brey, who can be forgiven for not having that arcane corner or the rule book memorized. Who got punished? Abromaitis — well, technically.

But let’s be honest, the NCAA is only forcing him to miss stat-padding games against Mississippi Valley State, Detroit, Sam Houston State and Delaware State, not meaningful basketball.

And by looking into a case like this in the first place, it sure looks like the NCAA isn’t doing anything meaningful at all.
