A lot of Democrats are angry at Sen. Joe Lieberman for backing Republican John McCain this November instead of supporting the Democratic nominee, Barack Obama. But the Connecticut senator (oncea Democrat before becoming an independent in 2006) would like you to know that there was no treachery involved. In fact, there’s a rather simple explanation for his behavior:
“He was the first to ask me!” Lieberman told an audience gathered at the Mayflower Hotel for Tuesday’s “Election ’08: The Global Impact” conference.

Sometimes, the simplest explanation is the best.
The conference featured Lieberman, as well as also-ran Democratic candidates Joseph Biden Jr. and John Edwards. But even Biden had to rib Lieberman for his turncoat qualities of late; although Biden spoke of his “good friend Joe Lieberman,” he made sure to add, “God protect me from my friends! That’s my quote!”
For his part, Biden and his bruised ego couldn’t quite get over the fact that he was at a panel discussing the next president … and it wasn’t going to be him. “I didn’t expect to be here in this capacity,” Biden said. “What the hell does it matter? I’m obviously the best candidate for president, why am I even here?”
