Nicholas Sheley, convicted of murder in May 2014 for fatally beating three adults and a 2-year-old with a hammer in a northwest Illinois apartment, is escorted into the Whiteside County courtroom, Monday, Aug. 11, 2014, for sentencing in the June 2008 killings. Sheley was sentenced to four consecutive life sentences. The killings were part of a series of eight murders authorities say Sheley committed in the summer of 2008, stretching from his hometown of Sterling, Illinois, south to St. Louis. He next faces trial in Missouri, where prosecutors can pursue the death penalty in the deaths of Jill and Tom Estes, a Sherwood, Arkansas, couple who were traveling in that state. Illinois Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner speaks at a news conference in Chicago. After being hammered by his opponent, Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn, for putting investments in the Cayman Islands, Rauner’s campaign fired back, saying Quinn’s own pension fund, and that of many Illinois teachers and other public employees, also have investments there.
