Senate Majority Whip Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, (pictured center) is cosponsoring a bill with Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., and more than a dozen other senators from both parties. The bill would improve the nation's background check system used for scrutinizing most firearms purchases. However, House Republicans are likely to oppose it unless they can add language allowing concealed carry permit holders to legally bring their weapons to other states. Mark Janus, a soft-spoken record-keeper for the Illinois Department of Public Health, sued his workplace's union over a $50 fee it receives that automatically gets deducted from his paycheck every month although he never joined the union.
