ROCKVILLE, Maryland — President Joe Biden says members of the Republican Party are embracing a political philosophy that is edging dangerously close to fascism before November’s midterm elections.
“What we’re seeing now is either the beginning or the death knell of an extreme MAGA philosophy,” Biden said Thursday at a million-dollar fundraiser, according to a pool report. “It’s not just Trump; it’s the entire philosophy that underpins the — I’m going to say something, it’s like semifascism,” he added of former President Donald Trump.
“I respect conservative Republicans,” Biden added later. “I don’t respect these MAGA Republicans.”
A YEAR AFTER BIDEN’S BIG SPENDING BILL PASSED HOUSE, DEMOCRATS SETTLE FOR LESS

The Republican National Committee called Biden’s comments “despicable.”
“Biden forced Americans out of their jobs, transferred money from working families to Harvard lawyers, and sent our country into a recession while families can’t afford gas and groceries,” spokesman Nathan Brand said. “Democrats don’t care about suffering Americans — they never did.”
The Bethesda, Maryland, fundraiser’s 100 invited guests raised $1 million for the Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Grassroots Victory Fund, according to a DNC official. The organization has raised what it is describing as a midterm record of $255 million, more than $92 million this year alone.
“Our team has to show up and, quite frankly, vote. Just simply vote,” Biden said. “We’ve got to win.”

The fundraiser preceded Biden’s first midterm rally, this time at Richmond Montgomery High School in nearby Rockville, after his summer vacation.
