Super Bowl champion Eric Bieniemy will join the Washington Commanders as the team’s new assistant head coach and offensive coordinator, according to ESPN.
The deal is a “promotion in title, contractual structure,” and a pay raise for Bieniemy, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Bieniemy was previously the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs. He helped them win two Super Bowls, but he was not the main play-caller for the team. He is, however, expected to be the main play-caller for the Commanders, ESPN reported.

Bieniemy is replacing Scott Turner, who was fired in early January after three seasons with the Commanders.

Washington is entering its fourth season under head coach Ron Rivera, who has a combined record of 22-27-1 in his first three years with the team, per ESPN. The Commanders won the NFC East title in 2020.
Super Bowl champion and Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said Bieniemy’s promotion is “past deserved,” according to ESPN. “He’s done everything the right way. He’s been a part of this offense and this team for so long, holds everybody accountable, is creative in making up plays for us.”
