‘Big week’ for National Guard deployments to the border

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection chief said Monday that this week would see the first major deployment of National Guard troops to the border.

“This is going to be a big week for National Guard deployments across the border states,” CBP Commissioner Kevin McAleenan told Fox News.

“We’re seeing significant arrivals starting today, based on the planning effort we’ve engaged in with [the Department of Defense] over the past couple of weeks,” he added.

McAleenan said the Trump administration is eager to get full cooperation from California in the effort. Last week, California Gov. Jerry Brown agreed to accept federal funding to use 400 National Guard troops to help federal officials with immigration efforts, but said some of those troops would be used in the interior of the state.

President Trump has said he wants to see up to 4,000 National Guard troops deployed to the border.

Meanwhile, McAleenan said Trump’s border wall is being built.

“The wall’s under construction, multiple areas,” he said.
