A hefty player and a hefty bar tab

One is overweight. The other is just foolish.

Let’s start with Jose Ceda, a Florida Marlins pitcher who showed up 10 pounds overweight to spring training and drew the wrath of manager Edwin Rodriguez. Considering Ceda is on a one-year, $400,000 deal it’s unfathomable why he would show up out of shape. He’s listed at 6-foot-4 and 268 pounds.

“How else can you give him more motivation?” Rodriguez told reporters. “We called you up last year. You expect him to arrive in great shape. That’s why I’m real upset.”

And then there’s Bryant McKinnie, an offensive tackle for the Minnesota Vikings (who was thrown off the Pro Bowl team last year for tweeting about strip club joints, among other things).

At a time when good PR is necessary for players, McKinnie ran up a $100,000 bar tab in Hollywood at a party during the NBA All-Star weekend. That’s a lot of expensive champagne. Wonder how many bottles he’ll be able to open five years after he’s done playing?
