Top 5: Reasons Cavs are horrible

Yes, it’s more than about one guy. When you lose an NBA-record 24 straight, it’s a system failure. Still, there’s one good place to start.

1. LeBron James » For the second time in his career, James turned the Cavaliers around. Alas, this time it was for the worse. The Cavaliers went south just like James did. Now Cavaliers fans are stuck in a place that is very south — and very hot.

2. Injuries » Cleveland should not be this bad. But losing Anderson Varejao for all but 31 games this season didn’t help. Guard Mo Williams has played only 33 of the 51 games. They’re stuck starting guys named Manny Harris, Samardo Samuels and Christian Eyenga. If you haven’t heard of them, you’re not alone. Many Cavaliers fans wish they hadn’t heard of them either. In a few years they can develop into … solid bench players. Let the parade begin.

3. Player losses » In addition to James, the Cavaliers lost key players Delonte West, Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Shaquille O’Neal. All played pivotal roles, and perhaps both centers are done as elite players, but they remain NBA starters.

4. Growing pains » They have a new coach in Byron Scott, which meant a new system. They also have a new general manager. Oh, and many of their previous moves failed: Jamario Moon, Anthony Parker, etc. And they weren’t prepared for James’ departure. Add it up and it’s even more reason to feel sorry for Antawn Jamison.

5. Sympathy for other Cleveland teams » The Indians finished 24 games below .500 last season; the Browns were 5-11. Perhaps the Cavaliers felt bad for standing out and felt like misery needed even more company? Other than these teams, the city’s sports scene is flourishing.
