SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) — The University of Rhode Island has been awarded a $639,000 grant to help boost the number of minority and women students studying in math- and technology-related fields.

The five-year National Science Foundation grant will go to URI’s Collaborative for Explorations in Mathematics and Sciences. The program will offer scholarships, academic coaching and mentoring and other support to students who are underrepresented in the so-called STEM fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The Collaborative expects to award 10 to 15 four-year scholarships and four or five three-year scholarships. Students must be majoring in computer sciences, computer engineering or mathematics.

University officials say that offering students financial and academic support will help URI graduate a more diverse workforce in STEM fields that are in high demand.
