McIlroy continually is leaving it short

Is the pressure getting to Rory McIlroy?

In the Wells Fargo Championship on Thursday, the 22-year-old from Northern Ireland shot a 3-over 75 and will need to go low on Friday to avoid missing the cut in an event he won in brilliant fashion last year, firing a final-round 62.

Since last year at Quail Hollow, however, McIlroy has not won a tournament despite being in the hunt repeatedly. His collapse at the Masters has been well-documented. But there have been many more examples in which he has come up short.

Since his win at Quail Hollow, McIlroy has finished in the top five seven times. In his career overall, he has one win each on the PGA and European tours but has finished in the top-five 27 times.

On Tuesday, the day before he turned 22, McIlroy faced a battery of questions about what happened at the Masters. He answered each with candor and no sign of irritation. But you have to wonder whether it’s all getting to be too much.
